Fun Language Learning with Movies



Movies, the biggest industry in the world, no one gonna say “I never watch movies”, all people gonna say that they are ever watch movie, even that only one or two movies. In this era, movie is not only to entertain, to be promotion media or only mood maker after we spend all of our time for working and studying.

They are the teacher, movie can teach us something. From movie we know about culture from another nation, the habit at one nation, another perspective to facing one problem, important issue or event (begin from politic, economic, culture, social, serious disease and many more), study about history, until study about language. We can use movie inside of language learning.

Talking about how movie can help inside of language learning, we can take the example from K-Drama, we gonna meet many of our girlfriends can speak or make simple conversation with Korean language. This is show to us if movie have big impact inside of language learning, they are simple, interesting, but effective. In language learning, movie are using to introduce or practice pronunciation, introduce new word until style of conversation.

Khan (2015) states that Visual aspect inside of movie will be help the student to understand about word, pronunciation, and how to use that at society. Another expert such as Eken (2003) support that movie can use inside of language learning as a idea maker or booster of human thinking, another support coming from Swaffar and Vlatten (1997) movies inside of language learning can become as understanding learning, so the student not only watch, write, and remember at that time, but they can use that for long term.

Talking about using movie inside of language learning, we have one method that can use to teach about language learning to student.

First we gonna collect the whole student in one room, before we play the movies, they gonna separarted into few groups, next step is we gonna play one movie with duration maximum 1 hour and minimum 30 minutes, in here they gonna demonstrate their favourite part (in here, improvisation be permitted as long the demonstration suitable with the favourite part), as long the demonstrate happen teacher gonna be do rating and fill evaluation according to the performance, how they understand their character, and how their creativity inside make new word.

In conclusion, movie not only about we happy or not, but movie can giving us advantage that gonna helpful at future.
