Music, new light to learn and teaching english
Hello and good evening. At this time, I would like to tell you about the role of song, that helps our English learning process or teaching process. As we know, is a lot of us always listening to music, am I right? it is happening to me too, which makes me can using English now because using music as my teacher and my dictionary. Here, music shows a new word that I never found it before and teaches me about how to say the word properly. Not just that, music helps me too, an event they did not have lyric. They can make situations around me become friends and help me to understand, focus and calm in my English learning process.
Music becomes power and a new method to learn the English language. music has 'puzzle mode' to attract the person to listen to him and give them some questions to be answered, begin with the theme, the meaning of lyrics, why the singer made the song, and many more. For education, especially English Language Education, music can be the media to develop some ability inside of student, as we know, in English, we have to dominate 4 main ability, begin from writing, reading, listening, and speaking. Here, I would be trying to explain how using music develops listening and speaking.
In the last discussion, we see if music has great power and meaning to influence people and can use to help the language learning process, now, we will discuss how music can using to develop speaking and listening ability. As stated by Cullen (1999) that “the activity which is selected for a particular song will determine which of these processes is active”. for the first process, we need to know and choose, the type of song, type of song that will influence the ability that we want to develop. So, to develop listening and speaking, we need to prepare 2 different types of songs, a song with simple lyrics and with the complicated lyric, we need to hear about how fast the singer sings the song, so we can make a size or limit in our learning process.
From another statement, Eken (1996, p.46) from his 8 points about what can music do inside language learning, mentions that music can encourage extensive and intensive listening, stimulate discussion of attitudes and feelings, until focus on common learner errors in a more direct way. In this part, the next step is to make clear guidelines, question, and explanations, with this we can know, size of the ability of our students by their answer, their opinion, their discussion, and many more.
The last statement coming from Gatbonton and Segalowitz (1988, p.473) stated that “a component of language fluency which involves both knowing what to say and producing language rapidly without pauses” in the last step is about repetition, we can do the process for some period after we got the specific result, we know the limit ability of our student, we can start to develop another method to support our teaching process.
from here we can about the power of song and the example using song inside our teaching process, once again, every method needs an update to be perfect and can give benefit for all, begin the student until we as the teacher. Hope this material can help us, thank you and happy reading
